New Album - Ex Nihilo - Out Now
A few months back, at the end of 2014, I had the opportunity to produce and record the acoustic duo ROVE. Brothers Bobby and Jason Chiorean, who comprise the band, have a unique sound sometimes blending folk with 90's Red Hot Chili Peppers or Johnny Cash with John Legend. Though their music embodies pop sensibilities which make the girls line up for a live show (you should have seen their kickstarter block party) there's also a lyrical and musical depth worthy of a second and third listen.
The three of us spent a few months in my studio writing, shaping and recording these songs until they were ready for their big debut this weekend. The album name, "Ex Nihilo" is latin for "out of nothing" which carries both spiritual undertones and a declaration of ROVE's first professional artistic endeavor.
One of the treats of this project was tracking Jason Chiorean's acoustic guitar, which was hand-painted by Winsor Kinkade. Nodding at their ethnic roots, the guitar includes the Romanian phrase, "Te Eliberez" which translates, "set you free." This happens to double as one of the songs off their new EP.
Another image shows up on Jason's guitar which I hadn't seen in years. The image of a "sprout" was an image I had helped to create years back during a re-brand of a large faith community in Los Gatos, CA. The final image, a collaboration with Danny Busch and Mike Ash, was meant to convey new growth and vibrancy of life. It was both descriptive and aspirational. I was so encouraged to see a new generation taking hold of that piece of art and expressing themselves through it.
As far as tracking goes, some music veterans lent their skill to this project and in doing so helped these songs reach their full potential. From Nashville, home of humidity and Jeni's IceCreamery, Brett Vargason sat in on drums and percussion. Tom Michael sat in on bass as well as performing the final mix down.
Here are the songs for your listening pleasure. If you dig any of these tunes... help the guys out by sharing ROVE's music page ... and pick up a copy on iTunes. It will be the best $5 you've spent in a while.
Puzzle became one of our favorite songs. From hand claps to catchy melodies this song bubbles with fun and a sense of embrace.
If you've ever had a big dream then this song might find it's way into your playlist.
Really haunting undertones of regret and despair with some great Tele hooks. We actually have a B-sides version waiting for a future release.
Turn it to 11 and have a good time with this song! If you have a convertible take the top down and turn it up.
The vocals on this song are off-the-chain. We had a great time tracking this one. I personally love a surprise electric guitar jam towards the end. Such a fun tune.
